Welcome to our Fender Play review which I have designed for you so that you can decide whether or not Fender Play is worth your time. As a musician who has taught themselves over the years.
I am aware that in some areas I feel as though I will fall short of my peers, the main reasons for this are that I didn’t learn conventionally.
I mostly learned intros and choruses through tabs and I do not know how to read music. I have learned over time what works and what doesn’t so I know where to put my fingers on the fret board.
However, since starting to learn the smallest part of theory such as scales and names of the notes on the fret board I do feel as though my playing style is becoming more holistic and I now feel able to be more creative.

I had tried lessons face to face but I felt as though I was too advanced for them so what is the point? Well, I decided to try a free trial of Fender play and this is a great tool as on the website it points you in the right direction of where to start in your learning. There is 7 levels to help you brush up on any skills you may have missed and it is down to you what you learn but the guide is helpful for beginners and anyone who is at an intermediate stage.
Stages of learners and what makes Fender Play suitable.
Fender Play Review in Detail
There is of course those of us who just want to jump straight in and learn our favourite songs straight away, there is a huge catalogue of songs to learn on bass, guitar and keyboard. There is a difficulty level set out in the form of plectrums, 1 plectrum songs are perfect for beginners as they are mostly using open chords and are not overly complicated. The next one is two which is more intermediate which is perfect for people like me as these are still not too hard but there may be the odd barre chord or more syncopation involved on the strumming techniques. Then, there is the 3 plectrums which are songs which are much more advanced and also suitable for intermediate players looking to go to the next level with their playing. However, of course people are going to vary with what they find difficult and what they want to learn.

Previous frustrations and what separates Fender Play
The really helpful part of the Fender Play website is that it has accomplished players guiding you through each step of the song which makes it easier to learn. There is also tips on how to tune the guitar for each song but they will usually teach you in the standard tuning version so it is easier to understand. This helps the learner, especially for beginners as it helps to avoid confusion and keeps things simple.
When I was a teenager I used a lot of tabs and they tend to be wrong sometimes or dependent on the authors tuning and there can be mistakes. I found free tabs online to be quite de-motivating at times when I was a beginner as I could not always make the tablature work for me. Since then, things like You-tube have come in which has shown that video learning is much easier for players of all levels and there are some great tutors on You-tube which is why I believe the price of Fender Play is fair. Firstly, they offer a free trial for 14 days, which is great as you can decide whether or not this platform will aid you better in your playing. Secondly, the price for the annual year is £89.99 for the year or £9.99 but I will let you in on a little secret, if you sign up to the free trial they may well offer you a huge discount to sign up for the year, I bought mine in January this year for around £49.99 plus tax and I will renew it as I feel I have improved as a player and the catalogue is always being updated. They are constantly adding new songs and promoting other lessons to you try.
Basic Fundamentals of Learning with Fender Play
So, let’s get down to the basics the main guitars which feature the lessons are bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and ukulele.
The first thing you need to do is select which instrument you are wanting to learn, then they will give you the option of which genre you want to learn. For the electric guitar and acoustic it has the same genres to pick as options which are:
· Rock – I imagine this may be the majority of the people reading this article, it turns out, myself included, that most of us were young rockers in our teens. The preview shows that there is some classics to learn using this pathway such as , Foo Fighters, U2, David Bowie, Pixies and much more.
· Blues – This pathway includes songs to teach you about some notable blues artists, the main one I was familiar with was B.B King who has some excellent songs to learn for guitar. There are other artists such as Howling Wolf, Elmore James and there is plenty of other artists included.
· Pop – This is perfect for younger people, as it is more likely to be the music they’re familiar with. Once they learn the basic chords, there are many other pop songs they’ll be able to pick up much more easily. Furthermore, if you buy a guitar as a present for one of your children, then Fender Play is the perfect tool to help them in their learning straight away.
· R&B/ Soul – This section is for more of the laid back soul lovers and R&B fans, this includes many well-known R&B tracks from years gone by. It has it all, anything from your 90’s R &B to classic artists such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
· Country – This will show you some great country songs by artists such as Hank Williams, Glen Campbell and much more.
· Folk – In this section it will show you some classic folk songs to learn such as Bon Iver, The Decemberists and much more.
Summary
All the sections above are the first part you will pick for your chosen pathway to play guitar and the great thing is you can change it at any time. All of the sections will show you the basic techniques of playing which are unique to each genre and what I really like is how user friendly it is. Furthermore, once you have chosen your pathway you will then being your pathway and this has 7 levels. The great thing is that you can choose to skip any of these levels if you already know the information. However, it’s a good idea to start from 1 to 7 if you’re learning a new genre. For example, I know rock quite well so I may go straight to level 7 and learn the song which is being recommended at that time, but on the other hand Folk music is very new to me so I would start at level 1. Remember, it’s completely up to you how you learn so do whatever feels’ right for you. One of the things I really liked about Fender play is that you can download an app, and can learn very easily from wherever as long as you have a guitar handy of course.

So, let’s begin and jump straight into learning, I have decided to learn 2 songs by the same guitarist to keep it simple. I decided to start with Black Summer by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This was marked as medium difficulty (2 plectrums), which is a fair assessment as the song is quite straight forward and features more basic open chords with progressions which are quite common.
They begin by taken you through the song step by step and this is really good as you can see the shape they are playing clearly. Also, they teach quite slowly, step by step so you never feel left behind by the teaching.
I also quite like this song so I was happy to learn this and felt it is one of their easier songs to play.
The lesson shows a shortened version and also informs you that in order to play along with the original track you would need to have your guitar tuned a half step down.
This is a quite a common theme from John Frusciante but it isn’t important to tune your guitar down for this song as it is just part of his style. Furthermore, this is why I thought it is good that is taught in standard tuning as it is straightforward and easy to learn.
The tutor for this song broke the steps down into the main chords for the verse, and explains the strumming technique used. In addition to this they strum each chord singularly to begin with so you are familiar with their chords and their order. I found this really helpful, after that, they count you in and you are able to play along with them.
